From Novel to Screen - Why Guidance Matters for the Unknown Writer
Announcement

Raleigh, North Carolina, to Become the New Headquarters for Mistreated

Margaret Writes, LLC is pleased to announce plans to establish Raleigh, North Carolina, as the new project headquarters for Mistreated: What's Happening to Maria?

The television series is based on the novel of the same name, with new characters, expanded storylines, and several unexpected twists created for the screen.

This move supports our long-term vision to build a North Carolina-centered entertainment initiative. Our goal is to create meaningful opportunities for local actors, filmmakers, creative professionals, current and retired athletes, businesses, vendors, and community organizations.

Our North Carolina Vision

Raleigh will serve as the project's central base for developing relationships throughout North Carolina's entertainment, sports, business, education, nonprofit, and cultural communities.

Subject to financing, production requirements, and final agreements, the project plans to pursue:

  • Local casting, crew, and production opportunities
  • Professional development for emerging creatives
  • Relationships with the Raleigh, Charlotte, and Wilmington film offices
  • Partnerships with North Carolina businesses and vendors
  • Employment and production-related opportunities
  • Community events and audience engagement
  • Responsible charitable and nonprofit partnerships
  • Authentic representation of professional sports culture
  • Collaboration with Millennial social media influencers
  • Engagement with domestic violence awareness organizations in North Carolina and around the world

Supporting Maria and the Latina Community

At the center of Mistreated is Maria Vasquez, a gifted Latina composer working as a live-in housekeeper inside the home of a prominent professional sports couple.

Maria's story represents women whose talents, struggles, and voices are too often overlooked. The project intends to engage Latina community leaders, artists, organizations, audiences, and advocates in support of authentic representation and cultural inclusion.

Our goal is to ensure that Maria is developed as a layered lead character, not defined only by what happens to her. She is an artist, a dreamer, a survivor, and a woman determined to reclaim her future.

Domestic Violence Awareness

Mistreated is a fictional suspense drama, but its themes address serious concerns involving power, silence, workplace mistreatment, and abuse behind closed doors.

The project hopes to build responsible relationships with domestic violence awareness organizations, survivor advocates, and community service providers in North Carolina and globally. These relationships may help inform public conversations, educational outreach, community events, and future charitable initiatives.

Participation by any organization will require its approval and a written agreement. The project will not imply endorsement or partnership without permission.

Current Opportunity

Margaret Writes, LLC is currently exploring strategic relationships with:

  • Current and retired professional basketball and football players
  • Spouses and partners connected to professional sports communities
  • Sports and entertainment executives
  • Television producers experienced in series development and packaging
  • Raleigh, Charlotte, and Wilmington film professionals
  • Latina community leaders, creatives, and organizations
  • Millennial social media influencers and digital storytellers
  • Domestic violence awareness organizations and advocates
  • North Carolina business, cultural, and community leaders

Future conversations will focus on television packaging, authentic sports representation, cultural inclusion, community engagement, domestic violence awareness, and the project's potential economic and creative impact across North Carolina.

All proposed partnerships, casting decisions, production activity, employment opportunities, charitable initiatives, and community programs remain subject to financing, production approval, availability, and written agreements.

What is a Showrunner Package Submission?

A showrunner package submission is the document - or collection of documents - that presents a television series to studios and networks. It compiles the creative vision, audience analysis, comparable titles, series bible, pilot outline, and attached talent into one cohesive proposal. For Mistreated, this package is the first formal introduction to executives who can decide to develop, finance, or distribute the adaptation.
